Welcome to Play With Your Food!

Ever since I was a child, I've played with my food. Never the food I still had yet to eat, but the food leftover (which was why my mother never discouraged it... it wasn't like I was going to eat what was left, so why not let me occupy myself with it?). Anyone sitting at the table with us could tell I was finished when I started making designs in my mashed potatoes or began building a fort with leftover bread crusts.

As I got older, I didn't grow out of it. Actually, I grew into it, with my designs becoming more elaborate and my materials more varied as I started pulling from other people's leftovers, as well.

With the invention of cell phone cameras, it became a habit of friends of mine to catch pictures of the art I created with the leftovers and someone finally said, "Why aren't these UP somewhere, you internet using freak, you?" And, well, here it is! Unfortunately, many of the pictures were lost over the years, so I just had to start with what I had. As I get more, I promise I'll add them!

All pictures are thumbs; you can click on it to get the full size. Keep in mind that these are cell phone pics, soooo they kinda suck.

About The Artist

Sushi Man - 7/24/07

This was taken at the Akai Hana on Old Henderson Road (excellent Japanese food for anyone who's looking for some). It is composed of leftover sushi, ginger, lettuce wrap bits and various sauces.

Olive Lady - 8/10/07

This was taken at the Olive Garden near our home at Sawmill & 161; it's made of salad castoffs and pasta leftovers.

BD Flower - 8/14/07

Created at the BD's Mongolian BBQ at Sawmill in the Jo-Ann's center. It's leftovers of two different meals; mine and my roommate's, so it could be just about anything...

Crab Face - 8/16/07

This pooch looking character was created at the Red Lobster in the Sawmill center near 161. He's made from the leftovers of my steak dinner (yeah, go ahead and laugh... I had steak at a seafood joint...) including fries, coleslaw and ketchup.

Have a Nice Sausage - 10/30/07

Have a Nice Sausage was composed of (duh) sausage! He also includes some seafood bits (I think it's scallops) and a bunch of tomato sauce. He was born at the Macaroni Grill across from the Tuttle Mall and is my roommate's favorite creation (I can't imagine why... I don't find him to be very creative).

Picasso Potato - 1/9/08

Alright, so obviously I didn't have alot to work with here... but no, my loyal players, that does not mean we can't come up with something! Behold, Picasso Potato, conceptualized at the Texas Roadhouse on Bethel Road.

Mashed Sea Slug - 2/22/08

The Mashed Sea Slug is my personal favorite, to date. He was made at the Applebee's in the AMC Movie Theatre center off of Sawmill, up near 161. He is made of a BIG pile of mashed potatoes, tiny bits of tomato, broccoli, a lemon wedge and corn. Doesn't he look like he's grinnin' at you?

Shrimpslaw Man - 7/9/08

This distinguished looking gentleman was created at the Joe's Crab Shack at Sawmill & 161, with leftover fried shrimp, coleslaw, french fries, cocktail sauce and ranch.

I dedicate this fine fellow to Brad; you know who you are.

Ketchup Head - 9/26/08

Ketchup Head was created at the Max 'n' Erma's on Sawmill at Hard Rd. We had burgers and onion rings, so the only things I had to work with were the junk I pulled off my own burger and some leftover onion rings.

Despite the lack of raw materials, I have to say that he turned out fairly well!

So, you want to play with your food?

I can't be the only one who likes doing this kind of thing, and I would LOVE to see what some of the rest of you are capable of!

If you would like to submit a creation for me to post, here, please send me an e-mail with the following information:

  • The name of your creation

  • Where it was created (if you remember)

  • What it's made of (if you know)

  • Whom it should be credited to (anonymous is fine)

Don't forget to attach a picture of your artwork and I'll see it's added here along with a description;
then you can show everyone what you did!
